US History: Evaluating Web Sources

When evaluating a website you must consider the following things:

  1. Author (is the author clearly stated? Is he/she a qualified source or information?)
  2. Sponsor (Is this clearly stated ? typically a business, school, nonprofit or other organization)
  3. Timeliness or currency
  4. Content of the site (Is there a clear central claim? Is is supported by real evidence?)
  5. Signs of Bias (Is the site associated with a particular interest group?)
  6. Purpose and Audience

If 1, 2, and 3 are not available you should move on to a different website.
